Diego Martin youth gunned down

Just mere hours after Meshach Samuel of River Estate, Diego Martin, was gunned down, the revenge attack for his murder took place a short distance away. Corey Calder, also of Circular Drive, River Estate, was gunned down as he made his way home from work. According to reports, 25-year-old Calder had gone to North West Drive, Patna Village, Diego Martin, when he was attacked. Father of the victim, police officer Trevor Calder, told Newsday around 8:30 pm on Wednesday he was at home when several shots were fired just outside his home. He said his son was not at home at the time of the shooting, and although they were concerned, they did not consider it a warning that something was about to take place.

According to the elder Calder, it was about half an hour later that he got the news that his son had been gunned down. “All I know is that I was home. They called me and told me Corey got shot a good bit of times and he died on the spot,” said the grieving father. When Newsday visited the relatives of the deceased at the Forensic Science Centre yesterday, the mother and wife of Corey Calder were too distraught to speak to the media. His father however, who witnessed the autopsy, admitted that his son’s murder was the result of Wednesday’s attack which claimed the life of Meshach Samuel. “My son get killed because he and the alleged killer for the Samuel murder were friends. Is all about the company that he was keeping.” The wife of the deceased, who wished to remain anonymous, was openly emotional, and questioned how she and the couple’s two children were going to make it on their own.

She said Calder was a labourer at the Tunapuna Regional Corporation and used to provide everything for her and their two children. “He was a loving father and a good provider to the children. He had his ways, but then again, everybody does. But really, he was a genuine person.” Asked what was Calder’s reason for going to North West Drive the night he was killed, relatives could shed no light on the incident. “We don’t know what he went up there for. We’re not from up there and we don’t know anyone really from that side,” said the father of the deceased. When Newsday visited the area where Calder was gunned down, blood stains were still visible in the area where he died. Patna residents, when asked if they knew of Calder’s business in their area, seemed not to know what his dealings were, or with whom. The autopsy conducted on Calder’s body revealed that he died as a result of two gunshot wounds,  one to the head, and the other to the back. Investigations are continuing.
