Invitation to ‘Kindersite’
THE EDITOR: Pre-schools and primary schools in the English-speaking Caribbean with access to the Internet are invited to participate in an international project called “Kindersite.” Participation will involve testing the suitability of materials for children in certain cultures. Kindersite aims to create a database of “safe” materials which young children can use with the supervision of an adult. This massive project, based in the UK, has a global focus and the work has the blessings of the Faculty of Education at Cambridge University and well-known Literacy organisations in the US. It is supported by a strong cadre of international researchers and educational specialists.
Mr Joel Josephson, an information specialist, is the director of the project. His aim is to create a “safe” zone in cyberspace where children of all cultures are free to interact with suitable internet materials such as stories, songs and games. The University of the West Indies, School of Continuing Studies, has registered with Kindersite. The ECCE South Centre students have agreed to sign up pre-schools to participate. Pre-schools with internet connections are particularly welcome.
Registration is free and sign up details can be found by visiting the Kindersite website at http://www.kindersite.org
