Man dies after struck by stone thrown by homeless man

AN AUTOPSY on the body of 51-year-old Jastion Jones has concluded the father of two died from brain injury consistent with being struck by an object on the head. Police said Jones of Point Fortin died early Sunday morning, six days after he was struck on his head, with a stone thrown at him by a 40-year-old homeless man. Detectives at the South Homicide Department said they will now seek instructions from the Director of Public Prosecution on how to proceed with prosecution in the matter.

The autopsy was carried out by Pathologist Dr Evelyn Burris at the Forensic Sciences Centre and witnessed by detectives of the Homicide department and Point Fortin CID. The cause of death on the autopsy report stated that Jones suffered a cerebral infraction contusion and oedema (swelling to the brain) consistent with being struck by a blunt object. Reports on the incident indicate that on Tuesday the suspect, who roamed the village where Jones lived, came to Jones’ doorstep at Moses Street asking for food. Jones refused and threw a pebble at the suspect as he (Jones) ordered the homeless man to leave his premises. In turn, the suspect allegedly threw a stone which struck Jones on the head. Several days after the incident, Jones complained to relatives of experiencing severe headaches, and sought medical attention on Saturday. As his condition worsened on Sunday morning relatives took Jones to hospital, but the father of two was pronounced dead on arrival.
