Arouca woman shot in fight with bandit

AN Arouca woman was shot after wrestling with a bandit yesterday.

While walking along First Street, Five Rivers, a few houses from her home at around 12.30 pm, Zorida Hafizz, 50, was confronted by the gun-wielding bandit who attempted to take her purse. Hafizz, who had just completed her Christmas shopping, refused and retaliated by wrestling with the bandit. The bandit shot Hafizz in the ankle before  escaping in a waiting car with her purse which contained $150, a phone valued $750 and other documents. She was rushed to the Arima District Hospital by  EHS, where she was treated and discharged.

About a week ago, security officer Mark Lewis was shot and robbed of his service revolver at the same spot while standing guard over delivery orders being made by Coca-Cola salesmen. Visiting the scene were Inspectors Hansraj and Thomas, Sgt Ragoonanan and Cpl Winston. Cpl Wayne Winston is investigating the incident.
