Chaguanas man is latest road fatality
A 37-year-old man was killed instantly when his car ran off the road in the vicinity of Charlieville. Reports revealed that around 7.15 pm, Rodney Hamilton of Plover Street, Lange Park, was driving south along the Uriah Buttler Highway when he lost control of his vehicle causing him to crash into a lightpole. Hamilton was rushed to the Chaguanas Health Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Yesterday the road fatality stood at 195 for the year so far. Up until the same period last year, 156 persons were killed in road deaths. Yesterday, ACP Mobile Curtis Lloyd expressed concern over the carnage on the roads and called on all motorists to exercise the necessary precaution when driving on the roads.
“People are losing their lives in circumstances in which the deaths could have been avoided,” said ACP Lloyd. He revealed that traffic officers in all divisions will be out in full force from today to the end of the year to ensure that motorists adhere to the traffic laws. The ACP pointed out that special emphasis will be placed on motorists who drink and drive, and those who drive with excessive speed. “I am calling on all motorists to keep in mind the conditions of roads, to avoid cutting in on other drivers, to avoid driving at excessive speed and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol,” said ACP Lloyd. He also advised that motorists should have a designated driver when attending limes and functions where alcohol is consumed. He added that when motorists drive under the influence of alcohol they not only endanger their lives but the lives of innocent citizens. He reiterated his call for motorists to act responsibly for the festive season in the interest of preserving lives.
