Champions Merryboys open against Preysal
Two-time defending cricket champions Ceramic Merryboys Cricket Club will open their bid for a hattrick of National League titles when they oppose Clico Preysal in March next season. Merryboys, who won the title in 2002 and 2003 will be going all out to make it three-in-a-row and have already started preparations for the new season. In 2003 they pipped First Citizens Clarke Road by a solitary point, to claim the winners purse of $35,000. Chairman of the team Patrick Rampersad speaking to Newsday said :”We are very happy with the way things have been going for the past two years and we are looking forward to keeping it that way.”
“We have already started planning for the new season and it will be very hard to defeat us as we have gotten into the habit of winning in the national league. One sour note though, is our repeated failure to cop a limited overs crown. Over the past few years we have reached a lot of finals and yet we have no silverware to show for it.” Merryboys were turned back at the final hurdle in the Carib Cup finals at Guaracara Park against Clarke Road. Clarke Road will be hoping to get a good start against neighbours PowerGen at Wilson Road in their opening clash. The “Greenbacks” have never won a National League First Division title and will be aiming to end this drought in 2004.
