Mackey wins Bahamas Boxer of the Year award

NASSAU: Jermaine Mackey, a four-time Caribbean Amateur Boxing Association (CABA) Championship gold medallist for the Bahamas, has won the Senior Boxer-of-the-Year award at the Ray Minus Boxing Club year-end presentation and boxing show. Mackey was winning the award for the second year in a row, and Ivan Moxey copped his third in a row when he took the Junior Boxer-of-the-Year title. Carl Heild finished tied with Alpachino Allen for the Most Improved award among the juniors and Garreth Scott turned in an impressive second year campaign as he finished tied with Elkin Butler for the most improved senior award.

The quartet will be among those vying next year to become the first Bahamian boxer ever to qualify for the Olympics. There will be three Pan American qualifying box-offs for the Olympics in Greece in the summer, and the region’s best will also be on show at the CABA Championships from April 9-16 in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad.
