Pet owners told to secure pets for Old Year’s night

DESPITE the recent police crackdown on the selling of fireworks in the country during the 2003 Christmas season, fireworks could still be set off for the New Year period resulting in dogs and other pets running away from their homes and getting lost. Some of them may be killed on the roads of the nation just trying to escape from the loud noises of the fireworks. In a public service message from the Animal Welfare Network, the organisation reminded the general public about  certain steps that can be taken by families to protect and retrieve their lost pets should they become lost for the period of December 30 and 31, 2003.

“Remember dogs are terrified of fireworks. Please secure pets indoors if possible and ask your veterinarian about a sedative, if necessary. “If your pet is lost, call the animal welfare organisations and veterinary clinics in your area to find out if your pet has been taken in. Place a Lost Pet notice in the classified advertisements of the newspapers — this does not cost much. Check the Found Notices.”
