4 murders in 11 hours
The year 2003 went out with a bang yesterday as four murders were recorded within 11 hours. The total number of murders for the year climbed to 227. Murder one took place in Princes Town where Cedros fisherman Ramesh Lalchan was beaten to death. The second was around 1.15 pm when Parbatee Singh aka “Baby” was stabbed to death at John Dolam Street in Aranjuez by a Guyanese relative. The relative then proceeded to ingest a quantity of gramoxone, and is currently warded at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. According to reports, “Baby” moved into the Aranjuez apartment three months ago with her relative who physically abused her because he believed she was unfaithful.
She got fed up of the abuse and moved back to her Aranjuez home with her children. The relative begged her to return, claiming he was sorry and would not abuse her again. Yesterday, neighbours were alerted to her screaming and when they looked out they saw the man drinking a liquid and claiming he had killed “Baby.” On closer investigation they were horrified to see Baby’s bloody, lifeless body in the bedroom doorway. When Newsday visited the home, the angry landlord Mandan Narine, alias “Packy,” claimed that on Christmas Eve he had warned Baby’s children to be careful because the relative had threatened to kill her. Cpl Vidalle is investigating. At 3.30 pm yesterday, Brian Davis alias “Small Bone” was gunned down by two armed men while playing cards at Leau place, East Dry River, Laventille. According to reports, Davis, 46, of Lovell Place, and Simon Scanfield were gambling at an old house when two armed men walked into the track and started shooting.
Scanfield ran for his life, while Davis collapsed dead on the ground. Police sources confirmed the killers were looking for Davis’ sibling, who was wanted in connection with another murder a few days before. When the killers did not get the sibling, they killed the father instead. Cpl Ferette is spearheading enquiries. At 6.30 pm, visitors to the Big Apple Recreation club had to scramble for safety when gun shots rang out at the popular Mt Lambert drinking spot. When the dust cleared, a man in his mid-20s known only as “Shooter” lay dead. The man was earlier seen entering the club with three men. When the shots rang out, two men were seen running from the building. The bartender claimed she went to the back when the shots rang out and did not hear anything. The unidentified man had shots to his head and chest. Police sources told Newsday that the area is a well known drug nest and they believe people know much more than they were willing to say. Sgt Abraham is investigating.
