Healthy twins born at PoS hospital

The first twins born at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital for 2004 entered the world last Wednesday at 4.45 pm via caesarian section. They weighed 2.50 kgs and 2.38 kgs. The two girls came as no surprise to their mother, 20-year-old Gillian Mendez or their father 27-year-old Lyndon Romain. Their birth date however, came days before the predicted January 19. “I was hoping for twins and he was hoping for twins too,” she told Newsday yesterday. Mendez has been warded at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital since New Year’s Day. But it was more than just hope that created the reality.

“I am a twin. It’s in the genes,” said Lyndon. This is no exaggeration. His older brother had twins, while two of Gillian’s uncles had twins. The twins are the Paramin couple’s first children. Gillian said she is happy and blessed for  having two babies while Lyndon is happy that they were born healthy. Since Monday, he has not been able to sleep in anticipation of the birth. The couple has not yet decided on names for the babies. Lyndon said they had chosen one name for a boy and girl but now have to “change it up.” They want names that will rhyme.  Although she is still feeling pain from the C-section, Mendez was beaming as she cradled one then the other baby to breast-feed. She admitted feeling “scared” about motherhood. Lyndon told Newsday he is not daunted by fatherhood. Their families are supportive and he said the twins “have a good hardworking father.” He is self-employed and manages his own green house in Paramin.
