Dr Mahabir’s funeral today
Health Minister John Rahael yesterday declined comment on the medical treatment received by Dr Deepak Mahabir from Emergency Medical Technicians last Friday.
The service was sharply criticised by Mahabir’s wife, Dr Chandra Sinanan-Mahabir, who said paramedics did not give her husband oxygen when they responded to a call at his Bel Air Gardens Home. Mahabir had an asthma attack around 1 am. In a Sunday Newsday story, she complained that the ambulance did not have breathing apparatus on board when Mahabir was transported to the hospital. He subsequently died en route. Rahael said he read about the story but referred comment to the South West Regional Health Authority. A media release is expected to be issued today. Dr Mahabir’s funeral takes place 10 am today at the house of mourning. From 1 pm his body will be cremated according to Hindu rites at the Shore of Peace.
