Panday vs Gordon goes to Privy Council

Former Prime Minister Basdeo Panday was granted leave yesterday to appeal to the Privy Council against a majority decision of the Court of Appeal that he must pay former Caribbean Communications Network (CCN) chairman Ken Gordon $400,000 in damages in a libel suit.

The dissenting judge, Chief Justice Sat Sharma, ruled that Gordon should only be awarded $100. The two other judges were Justices Roger Hamel-Smith and Margot Warner. The application yesterday for leave was heard by Justices Sharma, Warner and Stanley John. Panday, who will have to make a deposit of 500 pounds, was granted conditional leave.
