Family in court on arms/ammo charge

A SOUTH Trinidad family of three were granted a combined bail total of $275,000 on Friday when they appeared in court on possession of arms and ammunition charges.

The accused persons — a man, his wife and the man’s nephew, appeared before Magistrate Sonia Aleong in the San Fernando Second Court. The charges were laid indictably and Cpl Joey Samaroo prosecuted in the matter. They were arrested at their house located Indarsingh Drive, Diamond Village, on Thursday during an exercise conducted by members of the San Fernando CID.

Hubert Sylvester, 45, a bar proprietor, his common-law-wife Joanne Doolal, 35, and Nellon Sylvester were charged with possession of a .22 calibre semi-automatic pistol and six rounds of .22 ammunition. The charges were laid by PC Darwin Ghouralal. The accused trio were represented by Attorney Haresh Ramnath who requested bail for his clients. Cpl Samaroo objected saying Hubert and his wife had a pending narcotics matter. Ramnath countered, saying there was no danger of his clients leaving the country and the bail should be granted. He added that criminal convictions could adversely affect his client’s attempt to retain a club license. The trio is to reappear in court on January 26.
