Police service must be sanitised

THE EDITOR: Where will the $30 million crime fighting unit be when citizens need them? Criminals are getting more brazen and murder continues to rise every day with ten murders in fifteen days.

The abduction of Aneesher and the chopping of three women (family members) is an example of the criminals’ lack of care for anyone but themselves. Despite pleas from the women not to chop them, this criminal/kidnapper proved to be the lowest scum of the earth, viciously attacking this family. May Divine wrath fall on his sick head. The new crime fighting unit is another example of the PNM “grand charge” at fighting crime. This is going to be another white elephant and an unnecessary burden on tax payers. As I have suggested before there needs to be an independent civilian body appointed by the President (free of political interference) to clean up the mess in the Police Service.

The Police Service needs to be sanitised and made more efficient and accountable in the delivery of service. Lack of accountability is the key reason for the breakdown of law and order in the delivery of service. I firmly believe that the National Security Minister Martin Joseph is the man to make the service efficient in this new year. A leader must not act as a follower, he must have a clear vision of where things should be and outline his plans accordingly. The new crime fighting unit should not have come at such a high price to the citizens. Government must first look at performance before giving away the nation’s wealth. A patriotic son or daughter in any crime fighting unit is interested in getting the job done first and enhancing the lives of the citizenry; money becomes a secondary matter. I say nation first... Anyways, if this crime unit doesn’t deliver this year, the PNM should call an early election.
