People like you become leaders

To The Editor: This morning at 7.31 am , I was driving around the Savannah and saw a young man dressed in what looked like navy blue army fatigues walking on patrol around the parameter. He was just before Jerningham Avenue as I passed him and twice I saw him bend over casually as he approached one of the benches clusters, pick up a piece of trash someone had left on the sidewalk, and toss it into the nearest trash can. That is a young man that will go far. The only other man I recall seeing do that was a man called Carlton de Souza who at the time was General Manager of Royal Bank. Walking through the Bank one day , I saw him casually bend over, pick up a piece of loose paper on the floor and deposit it in the waste basket , and without fuss walk on.

He went on to head Royal Bank for the whole of North and South America. It is a mark of the greatness of some men that they rise above petty considerations of appearance and status to care for the smallest detail of their organisation or country, I know that those who will rise to the top are willing and able to take care of the little things as they rise, making the organisation or the country better for it as they go, and setting an example for the rest of us of what real greatness can be. I don't know who you are young man, this morning, but I am filled withconfidence for the future of a country that has people like you about to become its leaders, as I'm sure you will.
