‘Live up to your promises Frankie’
FED-UP residents of Madingo Road, Princes Town, are demanding that Works Minister Franklyn Khan live up to his promise to fix roads in the area by the end of February. According to Teekaram Jankie, after the protest by the residents last November, they were summoned to a meeting together with the Barrackpore Taxi Drivers’ Association at the Port-of-Spain office of Minister Khan. After hearing the residents’ complaints, Khan reportedly promised them their roads will be fixed by the end of February.
“We protest the bad roads together with the taxi drivers of Barrackpore and the beginning of February is almost upon us and we are seeing no progress in the fixing of these roads,” Jankie said. Another resident, Vijay Bunsee said: “This is not election time and they are not looking for any votes, so they have no interest in the poor man again. But I want to tell them we will not be fooled by dropping off some material . . . we want to see road pavers, asphalt machines and major progress and we will not settle for anything less.” The residents are threatening protest action by the end of February. “The Minister must take us seriously. We hope he stands by his promises or we will stand up to him in a protest the likes of which has never been seen in Trinidad,” Jankie threatened. Efforts by Newsday to reach Minister Khan for comment yesterday proved futile.
