Spektakula opens to appreciative audience at Queen’s Hall

ALMOST every calypsonian who performed at the opening of Calypso Spek-takula at Queen’s Hall Wednesday night mentioned Cro Cro or his calypso  “Face Reality.” Even acting Prime Minister Joan Yuille-Williams, a guest at the event, put in her two cents worth about Cro Cro and the Revue. Yuille-Williams sought to justify Government’s decision to give financial assistance to the Revue by explaining that they wanted to keep Trinidad and Tobago as the land of calypso.

She pointed out that Grenada had seven calypso tents and TT had to try and beat that. The assistance to Revue was meant to help save the culture, she insisted. Once again Calypso Spektakula presented a programme of varied music and comedy that worked well. The musical accompaniment was by Wayne Bruno and Rapid Response and MCs Donna Hadad and Tommy Joseph had the audience in stitches. Notable calypsos included Bally’s “Bandits Without Mask,” Duke’s “We Losing a Generation,” Chalkdust’s “Rumshop,” Kurt Allen’s “Crime Stoppers” and Poser’s “Thank You” and “Mr Q.” Other good performances came from Soca Elvis, Lima Calbio, Michelle Sylvester and Maximus Dan.
