Teen fakes kidnap to save marriage
A 19-YEAR-OLD Caroni sales clerk was reprimanded and discharged by Tunapuna Magistrate Gloria Jasmath after pleading guilty to faking her own kidnapping. The teen admitted before the court to lying about the kidnapping in an effort to save her impending marriage. The court heard that around 6 pm last Thursday, the clerk left her Grand Bazaar workplace in company with a 25-year-old married Central businessman. They later went to a hotel in St Helena.
However, at the hotel the teen was spotted by friends of her fianc?, who was contacted. The angry fianc? came to the hotel and confronted his wife-to-be, who explained that shortly after leaving work, she got into a car and was kidnapped, robbed and beaten by three men and a woman. The clerk also claimed she managed to escape from the car and made her way to the hotel, where she was trying to get help. The clerk was taken to St Joseph Police Station where she made a report. However, after constant probing by sceptical officers, the clerk confessed to making a false report to save her impending marriage. She was subsequently charged with wasting the police’s time. After admitting guilt and explaining the circumstances surrounding her false report, the teen was told by magistrate Jasmath that she (the teen) would be reprimanded and discharged her under Section 71 of the Criminal Act. Constable Dexter Dardain laid the charge.
