The power of naming
THE EDITOR: Every carnival season a strange phenomenon occurs with some famous calypsonian dying or some other saddened death which brings grief to many people. A few years ago it was Kitchener (Aldwin Roberts) who died, then it was Pretender, Zandolie, Mystic Prowler of course there are others I may not have mentioned. Last year it was Andre Tanker. This year Terror is also very ill at hospital. Some people attribute these mishaps to the belief that carnival is a devil thing, hence the reason why so many sudden and sad deaths occur, some are natural, but there are also murders bringing sadness to many families at this time.
Because of the crime situation many party promoters use the all inclusive parties to keep out the unwanted guests, but the incident at Pier 1 made us realise that we are still not even safe at these fetes. “Outrageous in Red” created a bad omen; out of rage blood was spilled so I suggest that the name of the party should be changed to “Hotter 93 for Carnival” for Carnival 2005. At this time crowd control is very important for the safety of party goers. Many of these parties are overcrowded, and in case of a fire there would be many deaths and with many injuries. This is courting disaster, and there is also the threat of pick pockets, and no one can truly enjoy themselves with overcrowding and with those people over indulging in spirituous drinks which could cause mayhem.
I also believe that the singers should refrain from saying “jump up and get on bad, but jump up and enjoy yourself.” Sometimes people are motivated in the wrong direction. I hope the management at Hott 93 would give my suggestion some consideration and implement this new name. Because party goers may think of that unfortunate incident dampening the spirit of the party enthusiast. Carnival is a time when many Trinidadians who migrated would come back home for the national festival and even bring their foreign friends so we must have proper security for what is called the greatest show on earth. Hotter 93 for Carnival 2005.
