Comet, Parkites in top of the table clash

Interest will be high when the sixth round of the 2004 Carib Sunday League bowls off today at venues across the country. Teams are now into the final stretch, when their fate will become known.

In Group “A”, the main tussle is between leaders Alescon Comet of Charlieville and Queen’s Park of Port-of-Spain.  The central boys have won all five matches so far in the series and by handsome margins. Queen’s Park are also in form and have been winning despite missing several of their players who are on Trinidad and Tobago duty in the Carib Beer Series regional tournament. Today they will look to skipper Brent Augustus to lead the way as they play hosts at the Oval.

Another keen battle is anticipated in Diego Martin, when National League champions, Merryboys come up against Las Lomas Sports. Merryboys who went under to Tile It Central Sports last week, will start as favourites to win the match. They have garnered nine points to date, compared to six by Las Lomas. A win for the easterners will put them in with a very good chance of getting into the knockout stage, while a win for Merryboys will all but assure them a place in the final four.

President of Merryboys, Patrick Rampersad told Newsday yesterday that he wasn’t particularly worried of his team’s position. “I am not worried at all, we are going to qualify for the final four. Although at present we are not playing the kind of cricket we want, we have to remember that we have taken a decision to introduce youngsters to the game through this league.”

In Group “B”, there is a four-way tie for leading honours but all that will change today as Clico Preysal with 12 points play neighbouring W-Connection also on 12 points. First Citizens Clarke Road United are also on 12 points and will take on an off-form Couva Sports at Couva. At the end of this round, PowerGen are highly fancied to take the lead, as they play Munroe Road at Syne Village.

Today’s matches:
Group “A”: QPCC vs Comet; Merryboys vs Las Lomas; Police vs Moosai’s; Central Sports vs Aranguez.
Group “B”: Couva vs Clarke Road; Wanderers vs Preysal; Mayo vs Green Arrow; PowerGen vs Munroe Road. NB: First named team’s are hosts.
