Baugh hits century in drawn match

ST JOHN’S: Jamaica and West Indies “B” played to a draw yesterday, the final day of their fifth-round Carib Beer Cricket Series regional cricket match. A century from Carlton Baugh Jr and a half-century by captain Gareth Breese helped Jamaica secure first innings points from West Indies “B.”  Jamaica were 299 for nine in reply to the West Indies B’s 242 when the match ended. Baugh, who hit a 114 and Breese, who compiled 72, shared in a sixth wicket stand of 200 to save Jamaica from the shaky position of 61 for five.

The pair came together after West Indies “B” pacer Antonio Thomas had captured three wickets to undermine the top order. After taking Jamaica to lunch at 92 for five, Baugh and Breese added another 74 runs to reach tea on 166 for five. Baugh paced his way to his century, reaching it by slapping medium-pacer Jason Bennett for a boundary. The West Indies wicketkeeper/batsman celebrated his century and pushed Jamaica past the West Indies “B” total when he hammered Bennett’s next two deliveries for fours. Baugh eventually holed to a catch on the long-off boundary off of off-spinner Ryan Austin. His innings lasted 304 minutes, off 230 balls and contained 12 fours.

Breese, who hit five fours in his 279-minute knock off 158 balls, was run out after he was sent back while attempting to take a single. A 23 from Jerome Taylor pushed the Jamaican score close to 300 when the ninth wicket fell and the match was called off. Thomas, who removed Keith Hibbert (5), Mario Ventura (16) and David Bernard (20), finished with three for 65 in 16.2 overs while Austin had two for 50 from 23 overs. West Indies “B” travel to Guyana for their next match starting on Friday while Jamaica host Trinidad and Tobago.
