Funeral service for ‘Uncle Les’ at cricket centre
Popular cricket personality Lester Armoogam who died on Saturday at the SurgiMed Nursing Home in San Fernando, will be buried today at the Roodlal Cemetery in San Fernando. Hundreds of cricket fans, players and officials are expected to attend the funeral service at the National Cricket Centre, Balmain, Couva from 11 am to pay their final respects.
Family sources told Newsday yesterday that a report that appeared in a daily newspaper stating that the San Fernando City Council had rejected an application to bury the biggest fan of West Indies cricket in San Fernando was erroneous. “I don’t know where these people get their information but that it totally untrue, as we never got any trouble with the city corporation,” the family member said. Armoogam witnessed 132 Test matches in which his beloved West Indies were involved and was a familiar face on the television screen whenever the Caribbean cricketers were playing overseas. The 64-year-old building contractor left his mark for his undying faith in the players which served to inspire them especially when they were far from home and were not getting the best of results.
