Kanhai hits 111 in TT 229

NAIN, St Elizabeth: Trinidad and Tobago sent to bat by Jamaica, were bowled out for 229 at the Alpart Sports Club ground yesterday. At the close, Jamaica had replied with nine runs for no wicket, needing another 221 to take first innings points. At lunch, the Trinidadians were wobbling on 63 for three, but Aneil Kanhai who struck his maiden first-class century, a brilliant 111 and Sherwin Ganga staged a grand recovery with a fourth-wicket partnership of 146.

But following the departure of Ganga who made 64 with six boundaries off 173 balls in his 257-minute stay at the crease, the batting collapsed. Kanhai batted for 247 minutes and belted 10 fours and one six off the 167 balls he received. He was particularly severe on Jamaica skipper and off spinner Gareth Breese who he heaved for a mighty six over mid-wicket. But his departure signalled the final folding up of the Trinidad and Tobago innings. Despite the bashing he received from Kanhai, Breese still wrapped up the Trinidad and Tobago innings taking three wickets for 35 runs. West Indies medium-pacer Dave Bernard jr also took a three-wicket haul for 57 runs for the Jamaicans.

Summarised scores: TRINIDAD & TOBAGO 229 -  Aneil Kanhai 111, Sherwin Ganga 64,  Dave Bernard 3/57, Gareth Breese 3/35.
