The worst performers of the Chutney Soca 2004

THE EDITOR: I wish to declare  Minister of Culture, Joan Yuille-Williams as the undisputed “Worst Performer” of the 2004 Chutney Soca Monarch. Speaking at the opening of the show, this Government Minister stuttered her way through the standard accolades and greetings.  When she said that her Government was pleased to be associated with the event and wished to see Chutney grow from strength, the 20,000 strong audience was hushed into a deafening silence and immobolised with disbelief. No one could actually believe that this was the same Government that just 24 hours before had been found discriminating  against the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha in the granting of a radio licence to PNM supporter Louis Lee Sing.

In addition,  it was the same Culture Ministry and Government that dished out generous funding grants to calypso tents that featured some of the most classless and tasteless acts, while Chutney tents passed the begging bowl.   It was only as a result of the weight of public anger that she conceded and The Nirmal Massive Gosein Tent got a few State pennies. The Chutney Foundation was now checking its records  in order to ascertain whether there were grounds for a similar discrimination lawsuit. Second place goes to Ann Marie Gunness who despite being a presenter for TTT showed her open support for Denise Belfon and Rupee whilst almost ignoring all other artistes. Ann Marie continuously cheered for Denise and Rupee while saying little or nothing about superb performances from Carlene Wells, Edward Ramdass and Roy Rampersad.   She should have realised from the silence, cold stares and non indulgence of her co-presenter Sham G. Ali, that that’s a No No. Take a bow ladies.
