Jaggernauth, Emrit rout J’ca
ST ELIZABETH: Tight bowling and dour batting put Trinidad and Tobago in charge of the sixth-round Carib Beer Series regional cricket match against Jamaica yesterday.
The Trinidadians, second in the tournament standings took first-innings points yesterday at Alpart and reached 76 for one by the end of the second day’s play. The have an overall lead of 159. Trinidad and Tobago made 229 in their first innings, to which the Jamaicans replied with 147. The visitors are to resume their second innings today, with Captain Daren Ganga on 39 and his younger brother, Sherwin, on 26. Earnil Ryan was the lone batsman out yesterday in the TT second innings, after being trapped leg before wicket by medium pacer David Bernard for six. But it was Trinidad and Tobago’s bowlers that gave the team their advantage, with offspinner Amit Jaggernauth and fastbowler Reyad Emrit taking three wickets each to limit the Jamaican total.
Jaggernauth’s wickets cost 36 runs from 16.2 overs, while Emrit’s came off 11 overs at 24 runs. Medium-pacer Dwayne Bravo picked up the first two wickets and finished with two for 30 from nine overs. Yesterday’s play began with Jamaica resuming on nine without loss. Openers Brenton Parchment and Maurice Kepple put on a 40-run partnership before Parchment was caught by Shazam Babwah for 32. Seven runs later, Bravo struck again when he had Kepple caught by wicketkeeper Gibran Mohammed for eight. The slump continued with the score on 59, when Tamar Lambert was caught at the wicket off Emrit for five.
In the final over before lunch, Jaggernauth bowled Donovan Pagon for seven as Jamaica went to the break at 69 for four. Jamaica lost Carlton Baugh shortly after the resumption, run out for nought. Captain Gareth Breese followed, bowled by Jaggernauth for four, and then David Bernard was bowled by Emrit for 24. Trinidad and Tobago are in second place in the eight-team tournament with 36 points. Jamaica are third on 28. Champions Barbados are clear leaders in the series with 60 points.
