Ato to run 200m in Athens Olympics
As part of the Government’s continuing efforts to help the progress of Trinidad and Tobago’s elite athletes and top performers, the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs have presented shot putter Candice Scott, sprinter Ato Boldon and swimmer George Bovell III with cheques for $150,000 each. At a meeting with relatives of the three outstanding athletes at the Ministry, Duke Street, Port-of-Spain on Friday, Minister Roger Boynes revealed that the Ministry will provide a cushion to athletes who have shown the potential to qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games. By the affirmations of Guy Boldon, Ato’s father, 2004 will be the best Olympic year for Trinidad and Tobago on merit of the talents of Boldon, Darrel Brown, Bovell III, Scott and the other members of the team.
The older Boldon, representing his son at the meeting, revealed that Ato’s main focus will be the 200-metre race which has been realised as the event he is stronger in, with only one event to focus on Boldon expects that his son will see gold at this years Olympiad. Also present in the absence of the recipients were George Bovell II and Vonetta Scott who offered thanks to the Ministry and to the people of Trinidad and Tobago who have shown her sister support. Bovell II revealed that his son was emotional when informed of the honour which was being bestowed him on Friday, again he thanked the people and government and vouched for his son’s commitment to Trinidad and Tobago.
