Children dance in rain
The light afternoon rain did not hamper the fun of youngsters crossing the stage as they continued waving, smiling and jumping to the music during The Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross Society Northern Branch Children’s Carnival, yesterday at the Queen’s Park Savannah. While spectators and tourists bearing cameras near the stage were running for shelter from the downpour, members of the small band “Pirates of the Caribbean” danced for the judges and showed little signs of wanting to leave the stage. The event, which got underway at 1 pm provided a showcase for beauty, creativity and colour displayed by babes in arms, toddlers and children up to 15 years.
Outstanding were the costumes “The Wright Spirit”, portrayed by the Wright brothers, winners of the Floats Category and “The Only Thing Better Than One Lara Is Two” portrayed by John Jude Aboud and Edward Laquis, second placed in the Couples category. While the latter was definitely a crowd favourite, first place was won by Jael Neptune and Arianne Baynes’ portrayal of “How It Go Look”. The youngsters, decked in white costumes bordered in primary colours, stood on either side holding unto a golden-framed window.
In the Girls 6-8 Category, Sabrina Gabriel portraying “Centre Piece For A National Banquet” obtained first place, followed by Isabella Aboud’s “Soca In De Chutney”. Third placed was Annisha Weekes portraying “Samba Dancer”. “Kee Kee Kee” portrayed by Netanya Kiel won Most Original Costume while special prizes were won by “Flower Power” portrayed by Karin Lewis and “Burning Bush” played by Krystle Sankar. In the Boys 6-8 Category, Liam Rahim portraying “D’ Ritual Of Revelry” placed first followed by Jordan Khan, with his portrayal “Cultural Explosion” and third, Denzil Patrick Jennings with “Pirates of The Caribbean Then and Now”. Babes in Arms Boys and Girls category was won by Aliana Welsh who portrayed “Reaper Of The Golden Harvest”.
