Cro Cro makes surprise appearance at calypso semis

THE CROWD went wild at the Calypso Fiesta Semi-Finals at Skinner Park, San Fernando when  controversial calypsonian Weston Rawlins “Cro Cro” appeared on stage, although not billed as a performer at the competition. Cro Cro took on a different role in his appearance yesterday, as he was a guest of Roger “Bodyguard” Mohammed,  who belted out an aggressive rendition of “Leave Cro Cro Alone. Mohammed’s political commentary brought the crowd to its feet as Cro Cro rushed out on stage at the end of the second verse of the calypso.

Mohammed’s lyrical content related to calypsonians having the right to sing what they want to, including Cro Cro with his controversial rendition of “Face Reality”, which referred to who should be “kidnapped”. Mohammed also mentioned in his song that he was sorry that Cro Cro did not go further in his calypso by calling some names of those “big pappies”. Another highlight of the evening was when Winston “Gypsy” Peters was introduced on stage to render his two selections, “Maximum” and “Every Shadow (Paradise Lost)”. Gypsy was greeted by loud ‘boos’ and shown lengths of toilet paper and signs which read “Flush” during his performance. But that unwelcomed gesture by the thousands gathered did not seem to have a negative impact on Gypsy — at the end of his renditions, Gypsy told the spectators that he still loved them and was eventually acknowledged.
