Probe SRP recruitment

THE OPPOSITION UNC has called for a probe into recruitment of persons as Special Reserve Police (SRP) officers. In a statement Friday, the UNC said it has received complaints from several citizens who applied to the Police Service to become SRPs. “If they are correct, it is now apparent that the PNM regime is committing acts of widespread shameless discrimination not only against citizens of one section of the society but against all persons or groups who are opposed to them,” the UNC said.

The party added that this reinforces the need for constitutional reform, proportional representation and implementation of the Equal Opportunities Act. The UNC called for an independent commission to probe the recruitment practices in the Police Service, Army, Fire Services and Coast Guard.
