Millenium Reign for Dimanche Gras
ROYAL Oak Derby 2002 winner Millenium Reign heads a field of seven runners in the feature Dimanche Gras Allowance race at the Arima Race Club Carnival Friday Lime at Santa Rosa Park, Arima.
Also in the field for the 1750 metres race is Tactical Bid, a winner last time out and Bon Voyage who surprised in his last start over a similar distance. The nine-race programme is timed to go to post at 1 pm, and local jockeys Brisn Harding and Haniff Emamalie will be in the saddle after their $1,000 fine and 30-day ban slapped on them by the Barbados Turf Club stewards were temporarily lifted by the BTC management committee, pending a full inquiry starting today. Both Trinidad and Tobago riders were caught up in a jockeys protest, which saw the cancellation of last Saturday’s programme at the Garrison Savannah, Bridgetown, Barbados. After days of rain, the jockeys considered the Garrison track too soggy and dangerous and refused to ride, a decision which did not sit well with the Bajan stewards.
Harding was at the Garrison to ride “Horse of the Year” Sugar Mike in what was to be a tune-up for his challenge in the March 6 Sandy Lane Gold Cup, while Emamalie was to ride Carnival Messiah in another event. Speedy Jave Takeover, a clever winner of his last outing, heads four runners from the Maniram “Boboy” Maharaj barn in the seven-horse field in the Band Of The Year 1200 metres sprint for three-year-olds. Maharaj will also saddle speedy Salsa Moves, Melanie My Love and Sunday Jewel in the event worth $22,000.
Miss Lover Lover is on a recovery mission in the Ole Mas Starter Allowance, and will pay to follow in 1100 metres race on the turf course worth $23,000. But this filly will have to contend with speedsters Fortunate Flag, Song Of Freedom and Lovely Honoree. Biggest field of the day is in the Queen Of The Bands Stakes for three-year-old West Indies-bred maidens over 1350 metres. A total of 17 horses were entered for this event worth $22,000 including three from the Maharaj stables in Lovetillidie, Majestic and Music Man who is first reserve. Following ARC president Gerard Ferreira’s proclamation there will be more turf races this season, only two events have been scheduled on the grass course.
