US Embassy: Trini women were deported

THE United States government yesterday said three Trinidadian women who were detained in New York last weekend had previously violated the terms of their entry into the US and were deported. In a statement, the US Embassy in Port-of-Spain said American immigration officers used information available at the time each individual requested entry into the US. “Normally, in such cases, immigration officials would establish that each of these persons had violated the terms of their entry into the US in the past and that they had invalidated themselves for entry in the future as a result. Deportees are normally given a package explaining the reasons for the action,” the Embassy stated.

Kelly Jobity of Laventille, Angela Austin of Diego Martin and Nasmar Mohammed of San Fernando were detained by US authorities at John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, last weekend. Jobity and Mohammed were shackled from the moment of their arrival to their return home on Monday.  Contacted yesterday, Austin told Newsday that she received no package from US immigration officers and she is still exploring her legal options. Jobity’s father Gerald said Kelly did receive a package but claimed she was forced to sign the documents in that package if she was to be allowed to return to TT.
