Jamaica score crushing 261-run win over Leewards

ST ELIZABETH: Leg-spinner Odean Brown and fastbowler Andrew Richardson captured four wickets each as Jamaica scored a crushing 261-run win over the Leeward Islands before lunch yesterday, the fourth and final day of the Carib Beer Series regional cricket match at the Alpart Sports Club. The end came 20 minutes before the break when Dane Weston was run out by Keith Hibbert for zero, leaving Ridley Jacobs not out on 22. The scores were Jamaica with 200 and 394 for three wickets declared and the Leeward Islands with 190 and 144. The Leewards resumed at 76 for one needing another 329 runs for victory. With the addition of 11 runs, they lost the wicket of Wilden Cornwall for 49, judged leg before wicket to Brown for 49 which included seven fours.

Captain Sylvester Joseph, the other overnight batsman, was then caught in the deep by Donovan Pagon off Brown for 31 with the score at 106. Wickets fell regularly with Richardson trapping Ian Tittle leg before wicket for 19 and Brown dismissing the experienced Carl Tuckett for his second duck of the match. Richardson next removed Tonito Willett (one), Gavin Tonge (zero) and Adam Sanford for one. Chaka Hodge, who was stumped by wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh for four, was Brown’s fourth victim. Richardson’s wickets cost 23 runs and came from 13 overs while Brown bowled 14.1 overs for his wickets which came at 44 runs. Jamaica finished their preliminary round fixtures with 52 points. The team will play the Windward Islands at home in the semifinals of the tournament’s knockout round. The Leeward Islands ended their campaign at the bottom of the eight-team standings.
