Calypsos tell true story

THE EDITOR: Calypso is an artform which we so often regard as the mouthpiece of the average man in our country. It expresses the views and sentiments of the people in our society.

This year after listening to so many commentaries in the Calypso Fiesta at Skinner Park, it is very clear to me that this year’s theme in our society is the rise in crime. With so many foreigners in our country at this time of year, I’m sure that they would have noticed this theme with great concern. Even though we have had senior Ministers making comments about crime in schools being quite normal at this time of year and the kidnappings are not as bad as they seem, people are no fools and can easily judge from the calypsonians, the mouthpiece of the people, the real state of the country.
