Mexico hand TT women 8-1 beating
SAN JOSE: Maribel Dominguez scored three goals as Mexico defeated Trinidad and Tobago 8-1 on Friday night, on the third day of qualifying matches for Olympic women’s football. In another one sided match, the United States trounced Haiti 8-0. The Americans and Mexicans advanced to the semi-finals, which begin Wednesday. Eight teams are competing at the CONCACAF tournament for two berths in the Athens Olympics. Mexico’s second victory in two matches came easily in a tournament so far characterised by uneven match-ups. Dominguez and Patricia Perez each finished with a tournament total of five goals.
Juana Lopez opened the scoring in the 20th minute, and Perez made the second goal for Mexico five minutes later. Mexican Iris Mora scored in the 35th and quickly followed up with a long pass to Dominguez that gave Mexico their sixth point. Tasha St Louis scored a goal for Trinidad and Tobago on a penalty kick in the 40th, after a foul by Jennifer Molina against Trinidad’s Ahkeela Mollon. But Mexico never let up. Perez blasted the ball past Trinidad and Tobago goalie Lisa-Jo Ramkissoon in the 54th. Dominguez scored her second goal, heading in a pass from Mora, in the 59th. Her third score came in the 70th. With ten minutes to play, Alma Martinez fired in a goal with her left foot. Cindy Parlow scored three goals to lead the United States to their commanding victory over Haiti. Haitian defenders pushed up field early in the match against the United States, triggering offside calls against the Americans. But the US offence soon broke through.
Aly Wagner opened the scoring in the ninth minute, and Parlow’s first goal came in the 17th and a Haitian own-goal extended the lead to 3-0 at the break. Judith Fenelon knocked the ball into her own goal off a shot by Angela Hucles in the 42nd minute. Shannon MacMillan scored in the 47th minute to make it 4-0. A bad feed by Haitian goalie Gina Montinard set up a goal by Lindsay Tarpley in the 64th minute. In the 74th, a shot by Tarpley was deflected by Montinard, only to land at the feet of Parlow, who scored her second of the match. Abby Wambach made it 7-0 in the 82nd minute, then Parlow closed out the scoring. The United States and Mexico will conclude match play against one another today with first place in Group B on the line. Canada and Costa Rica won in their opening matches on Thursday. Last night, Costa Rica played Jamaica and Panama faced Canada.
