Police win in Jean Pierre Memorial

LEAGUE leaders Police made a grand start to their challenge for the Jean Pierre Memorial Trophy in the All Sectors Netball League when they whipped holders Fire 45-39 in an action-packed match at the Eastern Regional Indoor Arena, Tacarigua. The Policewomen led 10-8 at the end of the first period in Thursday’s game and were ahead 20-17 at the half-time interval. They ran in the changes in the third stanza with Beverly Hernandez coming in as goal-shoot and Alison Matthews relieved Donna Charles at goal-attack, and the Policewomen ended the period six goals clear — 35-29.

Fire were not flaming out without a struggle, and they battled to the final whistle but only managed a tie the final quarter 10-10. Euphemia Huggins who started at goal-shoot had ten goals from 13 attempts and Charles had 24 of 31.  Hernandez had six of seven and Matthews five of seven for Police, while goal-attack Simone Morgan fired in 24 goals from 38 attempts and goal-shoot Merlicia Lovell scored 15 of 32 for Fire. In the other game, Defence Force whipped CFC 53-40, after trailing 13-12 at the end of the opening quarter. The Army-Coast Guard women outscored their rivals 13-10 to wrest the lead 25-23 at the half.
Defence Force with Diana Pierre 38 goals from 47 attempts and Lystra “Twinkletoes” Zamore 15 of 22 in good form, ended the game as a contest in the third period when they outscored CFC 17-9 to lead 42-32. National goal-shoot Janelle Barker was in accurate form for CFC scoring 32 goals from 36 attempts, but Duane David had only eight of 14. Meanwhile, the play-offs in the Alternative Division begins tomorrow at the same venue with Police taking on Government Printery from 2.30 pm, and Bermudez meeting Central Bank from 3.45 pm. And from 5 pm Defence Force play Fire and CFC battle Police from 6.15 pm in the second round of the Jean Pierre Memorial series.
