Scott proud of WITCO success
CANDICE SCOTT, the 2003 WITCO Sportswoman of the Year, was extremely delighted after she copped the award at the Hilton Trinidad on Friday night. “I’m very happy right now because I’ve been looking at (the awards) from ever since I was growing up,” said the hammer-thrower, “and one of my goals was to be the recipient of this award.” The 23-year-old University of Florida student, who broke the national and US collegiate record three times apiece last year, also copped the bronze medal at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, with a distance of 69.06 metres. When asked of plans for this season, Scott who also competes in the shot-put, remarked: “I want to compete in the Olympics and do the best that I could.” Brian Lara was voted as the Sportsman of the Year for a record equalling fifth time, following earlier successes in 1993, 1994, 1999 and 2001.
Scott and Lara were listed among the Top 10 Sporting Personalities of the Year, with cyclist Emile Abraham, swimmers George Bovell and Sharntelle McLean, sprinter Darrel Brown, hockey player Kwandwane Browne, karateka Cindy Guevara-Sammy, jockey Brian Harding and boxer Kertson Manswell completing the list. For the first time, the Trinidad and Tobago Women’s Cricket Board of Control were presented with the Jeffrey Stollmeyer Memorial Award as the most outstanding Sporting Association for the past year. The event marked the last time that the West Indian Tobacco Company (WITCO) were the main sponsors of the event, with First Citizens’ Bank (FCB) taking up the mantle on July 1.
