Adopt shuttle system for schools
THE EDITOR: As far back as 1983 I was informed by the Town and Country Planning Division that the development in Moka where I built my home, was the last parcel of land that was going to be granted permission to be developed, because the Maraval Road could not handle any more traffic, and that WASA was not able to supply water to any more homes in this valley. The Engineer that spoke to me obviously had no authority to make these statements, as several hundred homes have been built in the Maraval valley since then. Whilst WASA appears to be keeping abreast of this building boom, the traffic problems have reached unbearable proportions.
A drive that should normally take no longer than 15 minutes is now taking in excess of an hour. The main contributors to this enormous traffic pile-up are Blackmans School and St Andrew’s school because once one gets past Blackmans School the traffic flows freely. Someone from the traffic management department should look seriously at this situation, as an enormous amount of productive man hours are wasted every day whilst sitting in this traffic pile-up. My humble suggestion is that both Blackmans and St Andrews should have a more central pick-up and drop-off point such as King George V Park from where these children can be shuttled to their respective schools in properly managed 25 seater maxis, run and owned by the schools, and in this way eliminate the hundreds of cars coming into Maraval. This is my suggestion and whilst I am certain that several other remedies have been suggested, I along with thousands of other residents of both Maraval and Santa Cruz desperately need a remedy to this unbearable situation.
