Central Sports beat Comet by one wicket
Tile It Central Sports carved out a remarkable one-wicket victory over Alescon Comet at Pierre Road, Charlieville yesterday in the second round of the 2004 Carib Shield limited overs cricket series. Tottering at 38 for four wickets after 12 overs, Central Sports looked out of the match still requiring 122 runs from 18 overs with six wickets in hand. However Guyanese player Derwyn Christian who has struggled all season, came to the party and rescued the Tilemen sending them to a most remarkable victory. Christian was run out late in the innings for 53 as Central Sports got the required seven runs of the final over with one ball to spare.
This win came after the National League defeat Tile It Central Sports handed Comet over the weekend. At Wilson Road, Gregory Mahabir with 80 runs spurred on First Citizens Clarke Road to an emphatic nine-wicket victory over PowerGen. Chasing arch rivals PowerGen’s score of 169 for nine, the Greenbacks made light work of the total, getting to 170 for one in 25.1 overs. Mahabir scored 80 from just 66 deliveries with the help of 13 boundaries and Siloch struck 71 with three fours and a six to bring home the win and a place in the quarter-finals of the Carib Shield. Also in winners’ row was Ceramic Trinidad Merryboys who whipped Aranguez by 72 runs at Diego Martin. Guyanese Troy Gobin struck an unbeaten 85 as Aranguez chasing 244 runs in 30 overs, were restricted to 171 for four. National player Shazam Babwah played a magnificent hand of 78 not out to lead Preysal to victory over Wanderers after they slipped to 127 for seven in pursuit of 187 runs for victory.
