Manswell in Mexico for boxing series

TIJUANA: Top Caribbean amateur boxer Kerston Manswell, of Trinidad and Tobago, has arrived in Mexico for the 2004 Olympic qualifying boxing series starting this weekend. Manswell, the most successful Caribbean boxer in the recent years, will be contesting the heavyweight division for which there is only one spot remaining for the Pan American region. Kirt Sinette, Trinidad and Tobago’s former Caribbean middleweight champion, will also contest the box-offs. “Hopefully they will qualify for Greece,”

Manswell’s manager Tansley Thompson told CMC Sport. Manswell, who won silver medals at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) and Commonwealth Games in 2002, and the Pan American Games last year, has been training at the James Warren Gym in Florida.  His effort here is his only chance to qualify for the Olympics, since one of the two heavyweight spots for Greece for the Olympic Games, has already been taken by the Cuban Pan Am Games champion Odlainer Solis. Sinette, who has been training in Cuba, will have another chance at the other regional qualifying series in Brazil in early April if he fails here. Sinette is due to arrive from Cuba last night.
