Duncan, Hutson win CARIFTA trials

MARCUS DUNCAN and Wanda Hutson won the respective boys and girls Under-20 100-metre finals as the 2004 CARIFTA Track and Field trials began at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, yesterday. Duncan, of the recently-formed Silver Bullets Club in Arima, sped across the finish line in 10.40 seconds, ahead of QRC’s Andre Marcano 10.71 and Shelton Diare of Western Springville 10.86. And the diminutive Hutson, who got bronze at the last year’s CARIFTA Championships here, won the girls version in 11.51 seconds, with arch-rival Kelli-Ann Baptiste of Zenith Tobago (11.68) and Jerlene Francis of Burnley (12.02) trailing. Jamil James captured the boys U-20 400m in a time of 47.23, and long-distance specialist Pilar McShine claimed the girls U-20 1,500m in four minutes 46.74 seconds. And last year’s CARIFTA double gold medallist Rhonda Watkins easily won the U-20 long jump with a leap of  6.04 metres. Action continues today from 10 am.
