Citizens know your rights

THE EDITOR: I recently attended a three-day Human Rights workshop sponsored by the Dutch High Commission and Rights to Rights and it was indeed an enlightening experience. Being involved in child/youth rights advocacy over the years it is always welcomed to be re-invigorated with a fresh sense of purpose. As we engaged in the workshop there were words used such as “freedom, security, entitlement, common good, infringement, laws, consultation, public, private, resistance, advocate, duties, accountability to name a few. Very important words indeed when one speaks of human rights and words each citizen should know the full meanings of as we walk through this life.

TT is signatory to most of the major human rights agreements in the world today and as such our government is legally bound to adhere to them and we are duty bound as citizens to be knowledgeable of them, our national laws, constitution and other information that is supposed to contribute to the general order and mutual respect within our country. Most important throug-hout the three days to me were these sayings, “What touches us all must be influenced by us all,” “No freedom without responsibility” and “No human security without human development.”
Peace.
