Baptiste turns tables on Hutson in Carifta trials
KELLY-ANN BAPTISTE turned the tables on Wanda Hutson on Sunday, winning the girls Under-20 200-metre final as the National Amateur Athletic Association (NAAA) CARIFTA trials ended at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo. The Zenith Tobago sprinter won the half-lap in 23.89 seconds, with Hutson (who defeated Baptiste in the 100m final on Saturday) second in 23.97. Both athletes seem certain to be on the national team for the 2004 Games in Bermuda, as well as 2003 CARIFTA medallists Rhonda Watkins, Jamal James and Pilar McShine.
Watkins followed up her victory in the Under-20 long jump with gold in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.71 metres; James easily won the Under-17 800m in 1:55.64 while McShine captured the Girls Open 3000m in 10 minutes 31.31 seconds. Also in winners’ row were 2002 CARIFTA champs Corey Gibbs, who took the Under-20 high jump with a best leap of 2.05m, and Simeon Bovell, who claimed the half-mile in 1:51.19.
