Commuters suffer in Maraval

THE EDITOR: It is a great shame that in this day and age the travelling public in Maraval continue to suffer for transportation on a daily basis. There are people going to work and school children on the street awaiting that lacking transport service everyday. There are limited hired cars that work, but their commitment could be more zealous with a stronger determination in serving the travelling public. We are too advanced to be suffering for transport at this time.

The limited maxi-taxis in this area seem to prefer working the Diego Martin route, so the people in Maraval are denied that service. In spite of breaking the law, commuters rely heavily on the PH cars or people would have to walk from Maraval to Port-of-Spain and back. The PH cars provide a great service under these adverse conditions. I would like to suggest the participation of the maxi-taxis on Duke Street, between Henry and Duke Streets, and the hired cars between Charlotte and George Streets as they now occupy. This would alleviate to a great extent the suffering of the Maraval travellers.

The Minister of Transport should drive around this area in the evening to see the suffering that school children and grown-ups endure while seeking transport. It should also be possible to have a PTSC bus servicing Maraval. This would ease this serious transport situation. In a developed country transport is very important, and I feel very annoyed and even ashamed while seeking transportation in this area. The bona-fide taxis provide a limited service, and why should this be when only the PH cars that are available in a developing country. This problem is more significant on evenings. If we are to become a nation it is very important to develop a proper transport service for the entire country especially in builtup areas like Maraval where this commodity is badly lacking.

There is also talk all over the country about the traffic jams, it’s time consuming on the entire country especially the working class, the authorities must find a solution to deal with that problem. Let us hope that the suffering that commuters experience in Maraval would be grossly improved in the near future providing the Government intervenes, while finding a solution to this problem that is plaguing the people in Maraval for many years.
