Army, Police in fierce n-ball rivalry
DEFENCE FORCE and Police look set to continue their fierce rivalry in the Port-of-Spain Netball League. The Army-Coast Guard women dismissed Trendsetters 25-15 in their Lady Erna Reece Intermediate Division One match at the Lystra Lewis Courts, Princes Building on Saturday. Police were equally ruthless in dispatching Netaces 36-15 in their encounter. Mucurapo Ex-Pupils showed they are not going to allow it to be an all-services affair when they had a comfortable 32-24 victory over Horizon in the same division.
Defence Force were never seriously challenged, leading 8-1, 15-5, 29-10 at the intervals with Beverly Roberts scoring 12 of 21 attempts and Melissa Roberts sinking 13 of 19. Trendsetters got goals from Stacy Pierre (9), Gizelle Navarro (4) and Gizelle Barrow (2). And Gushier Grant knocked in goals from 34 attempts and Tracey Regis had eight of 15 for the Policewomen in their victory. Karen Sandiford had seven goals, Pamela James claimed six and Marisa Lewis registered two for Netaces. National under-19 goal-shoot Afeisha Noel scored 23 of 31 attempts and Nariba Grant put in nine of 16 in the Mucurapo Ex-Pupils win over Horizon, for whom Erica Job had 19 goals from 23 attempts and Kimberly Britto placed five of 11.
Arima Ball Masters had a thrilling 27-25 victory over Chips also in the same division, with the match going to and fro throughout. The Arima girls led 5-3 at the end of the first quarter, but Chips took over 13-11 at half-time and held a 20-19 advantage at the end of the third period only to be outscored 8-5 in the final stanza. Melissa Snaggs scored 20 goals and Giselle Hobson seven for the winners, while Joelisa Cooper got 13 and Leeann O’Brian 12 for Chips.
