Yorke stars for Blackburn reserves
LONDON: Struggling former Trinidad and Tobago international Dwight Yorke appeared in a reserve match for Blackburn Rovers on Monday night and helped them beat Bolton Wanderers 3-0. Yorke set up one of the goals as Blackburn Rovers ran out good winners over their Premier League rivals, who also had Caribbean players in their line-up — the Jamaica internationals Jermaine Johnson and Donovan Ricketts. Blackburn sent out an experienced unit at the County Ground, fielding the likes of Yorke, Peter Enckelman, Vratislav Gresko, Lorenzo Amoruso and Matt Jansen. Unmarked Adam Nelson headed in Yorke’s left-wing cross past big Jamaican goalkeeper Ricketts in the 25th minute and Blackburn increased their advantage with a 32nd minute strike from Jansen.
In one of the few attempts Bolton had on goal in the first half, Enckelman saved an effort from Johnson, whose cross to Dwight Pezzarossi early in the second half was hit wide of the target. Enckelman then safely gathered a low drive from Johnson in the 57th minute. Substitute Jemal Johnson sealed the game for Blackburn Rovers when he fired home his side’s third goal in the 81st minute. Ricketts made a stunning save for Bolton a minute from the end, when he tipped away Gresko’s curling free kick. (CMC)
