McShine, Bovell star at Southern Games
LONG distance queen Pilar McShine and Simeon Bovell both scored victories as the Southern International Games concluded at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre, yesterday. Both McShine and Bovell are among athletes preparing for the forthcoming CARIFTA Track and Field Championships in Bermuda. The dreadlocked McShine defeated arch-rival Antiguan Janil Williams in the women’s 3,000-metre open final, clocking 10 minutes 58.57 seconds. Williams crossed the finish line in 11:11.96. Road-running specialist Shermain La Saldo was third in 11:13.12.
Bovell who won gold in the boys Under-17 800m final at the CARIFTA Games two years ago, showed his class on the grass surface with a comfortable victory in the boys U-20 two-lap race, as he recorded a time of 1:53.75, ahead of Kevon Jobies 2:01.86 and Neil Francois 2:02.12. Another CARIFTA champ, Carlan Arthur, edged Venezuelan Nico Herrera to claim the men’s 800m open event. The pint-sized Arthur, who struck gold in the U-20 800m at last year’s CARIFTA event in Port of Spain, was timed in one minute 53.44 seconds, with Herrera following in 1:53.49 and Jason Parris 1:54.06.
