Haynes steals show at inter-club judo

The Trinidad and Tobago Judo Associa-tion (TTJA) hosted their first Inter-Club Judo Tournament recently  at the Jean Pierre Com-plex, Mucurapo. The tournament marked the start of the competitive season and was also used to recognise the donation of 98 judo mats from the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs. Trevor Haynes of Queen’s Park Judo Club (QPJC), the TTJA’s eldest competitor at 47 years provided the highlight of the tournament. Haynes pulled his team from behind when he defeated Reinaldo Novoa Jr of Olympic Style Martial Arts (OSMA) with a throw for ippon or full point with two seconds remaining.

Haynes received the appreciation of the spectators for his display of skill which belied his age but alluded to 25 years of experience as a judoka, a period which has seen him become the National Male 73 kilogramme and Under Champion. The Arima Judo Club (AJC), Malick Judo Club (MJC), Olympic Style Martial Arts (OSMA) and the Southern Academy of Martial Arts (SAMA) all competed but the lion’s share went to Queen’s Park Judo Club led by Haynes’ performance in the feature match. The mats are primarily for use at a regional judo tournament to be hosted by Trinidad and Tobago in November, but will also serve to raise the standard of local competition in the interim.
