Media should highlight positive aspects of our youth
THE EDITOR: The recently concluded 26th biennial “Music Festival” which ended on March 28 was a tremendous success. School children, youth, young people and adults all participated in various categories, groups and classes. This showcasing of talent and exposing our youth to music is a step in the right direction for the nation. We are so critical as adults, about youth and their negative ways/behaviour, yet we see young people, youth participating in culture as well as being exposed in a competitive way to music and all aspects of music.
Usually the negativity which prevails among our youth is given more exposure, more headline news, than the good that is being done, also at the present time the RBTT Bank is having a school’s debate among several schools throughout Trinidad and Tobago, exposing our youth to think and express themselves freely. More of this positive attributes among our youth should be highlighted daily/regularly. Why not televise or bring to the airwaves all this positiveness among our youth? All our youth are not criminal minded or misguided, the unfortunate few do not reflect on all youth. Music Festival and RBTT Bank school’s debate highlights the talent of youth, and their potential.
Also I blame the media, the press for not exposing such gifted/talented students, youth who are making a positive contribution to society. Our future leaders are all not picking up guns or part of a school gangs, yes some praise, some kudos, most also go out to the ones who are preparing themselves for a better and brighter tomorrow. Also to thank their parents and teachers for instilling such discipline among youth.
