Cool QRC dispatch St Anthony’s b-ballers
Disciplinary problems hampered St Anthony’s College’s progress in the Colleges Invitational Basketball Tournament on Saturday at the St Paul’s Street Sport Facility, Port-of-Spain. St Anthony’s were duly beaten 76-62 by North Zone Under-20 champs Queen’s Royal College (QRC). Jabari Phillip’s early exit on the heels of a double technical foul-out signalled the collapse of the evening’s proceedings. This incident escalated into a rash of angry words and strong play checkered by dubious decisions on the part of all on court personalities. QRC kept their cool in the eye of the storm and Dominic Thompson scored 18, Ryan John had 10, Dean Williams put in 11, Lori Adams registered 12 and captain Darren Cowie sank 13 as the normally composed college team restored grace to the game.
In an effort to avoid sending their opponents to the free-throw line QRC allowed St Anthony’s to score at will in the second half having already built up a sizeable lead. This saw St Anthony’s captain Anton Francis record 15 points, Imo Williams put in 12, Ramon Parsons had 11 and Shakie Lashley ended on 10. Sunday’s match featured East Zone Under-20 Champions Arima Senior Comprehensive racing to a rousing 100-38 win over North Zone Under-20 runners-up Fatima College at the Maloney Indoor Sport Arena.
Randy Greenidge had a match-high 36 points, Querido Noel ended on 21, Michael Frederick scored 17, Real Didier had 12 and Nigel Joseph contributed 10 points to see Arima to a convincing win. Without seven-foot eight-inches centre Jason Sharpe however Fatima were forced to call on their other resources who unfortunately were not in a position to respond, Akinola Simon had 12, Javon Forde put in 10 and Robert Sandiford made 8 but these efforts could not match the triple figures achieved by Arima and Fatima left the court second best.
