$12,000 Relay Festival to launch Hampton Games

THERE will be over $12,000 at stake on Sunday at the Relay Festival to launch this year’s 30th edition of the Hampton International Ga-mes, scheduled for May 1 and 2 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo. Hampton will stage the festival around the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain starting opposite the Botanical Gardens at 4 pm. Winners of each of the six 4x100 relay events for Under-17 boys, Under-17 girls, men open, women open, masters over-40 and women over-40 will collect a $500 cheque.

The runners-up will get $300 and third placed, $200. There will also be two one-lap race walking events for men and women. Meanwhile, Hampton chairman Rawle Raphael noted an error in the Games programme which had events No 34 and No 35 as 1,500 metres for Boys Under-9 and Girls Under-9.  This, however, should read “150 metres.” And the 100 metres for Boy Under-20 was omitted and should be included in the programme as event No 28a. At the Games, soca artistes Destra, Maximus Dan and Shurwayne Winchester among others will be performing at two intervals on opening day and the second day.
